What Happened to Samourai Wallet?
On April 24, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice arrested the founders of Samourai Wallet and seized its servers, domain, and infrastructure. The original Android app was removed from distribution and is no longer safe to use.
However, your Bitcoin was never seized. Your funds live on the Bitcoin blockchain, secured by your private keys (seed phrase). The DOJ took the company’s servers — not your coins.
This guide walks you through recovering your Bitcoin using trusted, open-source alternative wallets like Sparrow Wallet and Electrum.
⚠ Beware of Recovery Scams
Never pay someone to recover your wallet. Official recovery is free — you only need Sparrow or Electrum and your seed phrase.
Never enter your seed phrase on any website. Legitimate wallets are desktop applications, not web pages.
Never share your seed phrase with anyone claiming to offer “recovery services.” These are scams.
Problem
App gone. Wallet not syncing. Balance shows zero. You search: “Samourai wallet recovery code.”
Agitation
• Servers seized. • Website replaced by FBI notice. • Scammers targeting recovery keywords. • Whirlpool funds not visible.

Over 100,000 users affected by the wallet’s unexpected closure.

Your Bitcoin lives on-chain. Recovery requires:
1. 12-word seed phrase
2. Passphrase (if used)
3. Correct derivation path
Step 1 — Verify Your Seed
Locate your 12 words. If you used a passphrase, you must enter it exactly. Wrong passphrase = different wallet.
Step 2 — Migrate to Sparrow
1. Download Sparrow
2. File → New Wallet
3. "I already have a seed"
4. Enter 12 words
5. Enable passphrase (if used)
6. Discover Wallet → Import
Add Whirlpool accounts manually if needed.
Step 3 — Electrum Alternative Full Guide →
1. Download Electrum
2. "I already have a seed"
3. Options → BIP39
4. Enter seed
5. Set derivation path: m/84'/0'/0'
Set password.
Step 4 — Verify Balance
If balance appears incorrect:
• Check passphrase spelling
• Add Whirlpool paths
• Review UTXO accounts
Critical: Move to New Seed
Once recovered: generate fresh wallet, send all funds, retire old seed. Your xpub may be compromised.
